How to play Canfield Solitaire

Bring your attention to one round of Canfield Solitaire. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Use the control method described here for this activity. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Check the rule before repeating the action. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
