How to play Peg Solitaire

Try Peg Solitaire at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
